I have had congestion (runny nose) for 6-7 weeks, ringing in my ears for 3 weeks. Antibiotics 1 week--no help? Is there anything I can do? The antibiotics may have helped a bit--but not much. I take ibuprofen, over the counter cold medication & occasionally zinc, but nothing helps.

Dawn replied: "I would try to eat at least 2 or 3 cloves of fresh garlic a day for at least a couple of days. It is a natural antibiotic/antiviral/anti-fungal herb. You could take a clove of garlic and press it in a garlic press to add to any juice. (But wait 15 minutes after cutting it, or pressing it, before eating it) Garlic was used as an antibiotic in World War I. I'd also get some Vitamin C of some type in my body at least twice a day. Every time you take a medication, it depletes your body of that vitamin. Also get some Vitamin D. Ginger Root Tea would also help with nausea and vomiting. You can buy fresh fresh Ginger Root at most grocery stores. All you do is boil about 5 slices in a pot for about 5 minutes. Pour in a mug, add honey, or sugar, and drink. Try drinking some fruit or, vegetable juices and drink some hot chicken broth. You could also drink some Green Tea. It has a lot of antioxidants in it. Remember, plenty of fluids, especially with a fever. A Neti Pot would be great if you have stuffed up sinuses. And a humidifier is great to use at night for head & chest congestion. To put a stop to constant coughing, slice off a thin piece of garlic with a razor blade and put it in your mouth like a throat lozenge. For garlic breath, just brush your teeth with some baking soda. And for the sore throat, gargle with warm salt water 3 times a day. With this advice, you should be back on your feet in no time! Good luck."

My 1 year old has a fever and runny nose? My daughter has a fever of 102.4. I just gave her Childrens Ibuprofen about 30 mins ago, Im going to re-take her temp and then call her doctor in 30 mins (wanted to wait a hour to see if it went down). Anyways my question is.. Besides being up half the night (she would only sleep in mommy and daddys bed, wouldnt sleep in hers) She is acting fine, just a bit whinny.. But shes laughing and eating and drinking like normal.. Just a really runny nose and a fever.. I AM going to call her doctor, I just wanted to see opinions on if this is normal, As I am a first time mother and she has never been sick before. Thanks. (I gave her a warm/cool bath also, not cold to the point where it would shock her, but just right...)

Jessica S replied: "She's fine. Kids get sick. Seasons are changing. Germs are all over. Don't stress out so much. I know it's hard."

fallenfairy replied: "she may be teething that could be the problem. if she is acting normal it mght be her teeth or maybe an ear infection. take her in to the drs and have her checked out."

layla replied: "Most of the time kids (and adults) feel the worst at night time. My kids doc told me the whole bath thing wont help or hurt. The doctors weekend line will probably tell you to switch between motrin and tylenol. Props to you by the way for having a 1 year old that hasnt been sick yet. She could probably be teething too. I hope she feels better!"

evol replied: "she should be fine. My 20 month old used to get really runny noses & a little bit of a fever.. we asked the dr at his checkup and he said it was normal for a child's temp to fluctuate a little esp when the seasons are changing && it's all going around.. Go ahead and call the dr, see what they tell you, but don't stress/freak out over it.. esp if she's acting normal.. it happens to everyone."

i have a sore throat, nose is runny, ears and head hurt as well.? my throat is NOT red! and i already took an allergy pill and 1 ibuprofen. and i'm still the same. any advise?

she knows it replied: "It's just common allergies. You could get one of those things to clear your nose and take 1-2 more ibuprofen. Drink water and get a good rest. I used to get allergies like this all the time, take Zyrtec if you don't already. It's been the best one so far."

Joseph the Second replied: "You have an Illness- NOT an Allergy (so quit wasting those pills !). -The sore throat is the "tip off" ; -it means the onset of a viral Infection. What You NEED; is a cup of hot tea with Honey, afterwhich you take 2 Aspirin, go to bed & get at LEAST 10 hours of Sleep. If You DON'T feel any better Tomorrow- stay HOME from wherever, & lie around until you DO. You really DON'T need to "share" whatever it is you've GOT- with everybody who's Celebrating the 4th of July Weekend ! -Hope You feel better soon ! :)"

Don't believe replied: "If you are still in that condition I would consult a doctor because it could be the flu or possibly the swine flu because I think they have some of those same symptoms as well I'm not an expert on this but just check to make sure"

Harold R replied: "Allergies take time to go away. Drink a lot of water- at least one glass every hour during the day time and take sufficient rest. This will improve your immune system to fight with allergens. If symptoms don't appear to improve in a couple of days then visit a doctor to rule out any infection."

aquacutnesss replied: "It is an allergy to pollen or any pet you have been near. I would get an appointment to the doctor so he can consoult your symptoms with an allergist"

sudafed pe and ibuprofen OR dayquil and nyquil? I have a stuffed, runny nose, head cold, im congested, really sore throat, a cough, phlegm, i can't taste my food, and now a headache. I have had all of this for three days now, getting worse.

lora replied: "DOCTOR!"

Can i use medicine after drinking a energy drink? Today i drank a monster energy, But my nose was feeling real stuffy this morning. So now i have high fever and runny nose. Can i use my ibuprofen or paracetamol to reduce my fever? I drank the monster energy 5 hours ago.

Bruno replied: "it would be absolutely fine. and I've heard caffeine helps you to get over sicknesses."

B C replied: "Of course you can. I don't think there is any significant interaction between ibuprofen and paracetamol. The only thing about ibuprofen is, because it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, it ought to be taken on a full, and not an empty stomach (because non-steroidals can cause gastric ulcers, if taken frequently on an empty stomach)."

took ibuprofen, now i wanna take sinus pills? about 1-2 hours ago i took ibuprofen for a headache. i am really stuffed up with a runny nose and i just found some sinus medicine. there 500mg ones. is it ok to take two of those even though i took ibuprofen not that long ago. i need to get rid of my runny nose ! lol

clydesdale44 replied: "Totally ok, Ibuprofen is safe"

How long does an average viral infection last? My 9 yr old became sick on Christmas day. He had a fever of 103 (no reason to panic in itself, his fevers are always high, but easily controlled with ibuprofen & lukewarm showers), and a headache & sore throat. No coughing, no runny nose. I took him to his Doctor, and she said it was a virus. Well....it's Jan 5th now, and he still has the headache & fever (100 day, 102 at night). I called the Dr. today, but the office never got back to me.

jennyann 4 replied: "Go to a different dr as a fever is usually a sign of an infection/"

timemaster replied: "a virus usually stays in your body from 3 days to a week, and in the worst cases a month."

Mr. Cool replied: "Get him in to the Doctor as soon as possible.... it may be getting worse and needs stronger medication..... the poor baby is not feeling good."

barefootboy replied: "Viral infections may be short-lived or last a while. Too many factors to say for sure as it's different for everyone every time. The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen). Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat. Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth. There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is: hexylresorcinol But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients. The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:..."

can i take ibuprofen and simple over the counter equate allergy medicine together? i woke up this morning to a quite painful sore throat. I usually get these when season change comes around but the one i had this morning kept me up. I recently moved to Tallahassee for school so maybe i'm reacting different. I took 2 ibuprofen today before class and they made my day 100% better i couldn't ask for anything better after what i had experienced this morning. My nose is still runny and i do have some gross crap in my throat, would it be safe ok to take an antihistamine in conjunction with ibuprofen? i just want to get rid of the runny nose. thanks

K1208 replied: "Yes it's fine."

seneca7 replied: "Yes, this is fine. The antihistamine will dry things up for you and the ibuprofen will act as an anti-inflammatory and pain killer. I am a nurse."

How to get rid of a cold? I have a really nasty cold that's been lingering since friday. I have a sore, phlegmy cough, a stuffed, runny nose and I have a thumping headache. I keep losing my voice as well, which is really irritating, especially in the middle of a conversation! How can I get rid of it quickly? I don't want anymore time off school, so preferably remedies that will work while I sleep. I've tried vapor rub, ibuprofen, glycerin, but none of it seems to work. I've had ten colds since September and I think my immune system has just decided to retire and watch repeats of friends (much like the person, hehe) The thing is, I've been off all those ten times and I honestly don't want to miss school (there's a first) But there may be luck! It's snowing quite heavily where I live so fingers crossed that school's shut tomorrow so I can curl up in bed with a bowl of chicken soup, water and a chocolate bar.

Ernie replied: "vitamin c"

jandy replied: "nyquil at night, dayquil daytime, wash hands, have to wait it out, treat symptoms. it's a virus and nothing you can do about it. don't double cold meds when taking a multi symptom med like nyquil. eat heathfully. wash face /nose gently, apply small amt of bacitracin around nose, irrigate sinuses with warm saline, McNeil sinus rinse from Walmart, yep, squirt warm saline up your nose and blow it out, a couple of times a day, helps erradicate virus load."

kadel replied: "Buy sambucol. It is at health food stores and some pharmacies. It has been tested by the British and found to decrease the severity and duration of colds and flu. We take it in my family as soon as we start to get a cold. It really works. Also drink lots of liquids, particularly hot beverages."

Song J replied: "1. have a rest, do no think about work school. 2. drink hot water, the water will bring the " poision " out of your body. 3. do not eat oily food. vegetables is better. no spicy food even you it is your favorite. spicy is not good for your throat be happy! you will come out of the problem soon!"

bravis replied: "OK. there is nothing to worry its just a mild infection, for ur ruining nose u can have an anti-histamine and take vitamin-c tabs. u'll be fine soon. cold takes 7days to leave if u take drugs and it'll take 7 days without drugs.. the drugs i gave r just 4 relieve, its the best u can do. get well soon!! and stay warm."

Why am i constantly sick with a cold? I get colds ALL the time. They usually start at the begging of fall (around this time) and they come and go for long periods until late spring. Its mostly a runny nose and sometimes a sore throat. I take an ibuprofen when i get the colds and they usually last a week. They are really annoying because i am constantly blowing my nose and it makes me hard to do sports like running and swimming because i need to breath through my nose. Please help with any suggestions. thanks!

Mel replied: "Weak immune system? Buff it up by taking Vitamin C supplements or just by drinking orange juice daily!"

AhhhSashaaa :) replied: "Your immune system is probably just weak. Eat fruits & veggies with loads of vitamin C & antioxidants."

onlymatch4u replied: "You need to fix your immune system. That generally involves many things. The first and foremost of those things is to get off of the SAD diet. (standard American diet). If you were a researcher trying to come up with a diet suggestion that would make people sick, the Standard American Diet would be an excellent choice. The next best thing to that would be to follow the so called "food experts" suggestions and that would finish you off. It's a very sad state of affair and It's difficult to be healthy in America today. Doctors have NO clue about what health is and how to make people healthy. They treat symptoms with drugs and surgery. That is not health, that's body abuse. Like you, I used to get about 4 or more colds per year, allergies that were so bad that I would have my eyes swollen shut, sneezing for over 4 months, and get a bad case of the flu each year to boot. I have not had a cold, flu, or a single allergy for over 5 years now. I changed my diet, NEVER EVER get flu shots, do NOT take ANY medications, have lots of energy, and am completely off Synthroid because my thyroid is now working incredibly well. I strongly suggest you see a Certified Nutritional Therapist to get tested for nutritional deficiencies. They can test you and tell you exactly how much you need of a nutrient without any guesswork and make recommendations as to a diet that will make you healthy designed specifically for you and your needs. Doctors cannot do this because they have NO idea how to make you healthy, just recommend drugs or surgery for a particular ailment. Your body forms mucous to prevent the viruses or bacteria from entering your blood stream. When you take those drugs that reduce the mucous, yep, you get the germs in your blood and prolong the agony. Most of the drugs for colds are labeled "for cold relief," not a "cold cure." They should be labeled, "extend your cold with this relief drug, and we will keep selling it to you and make more money." In regard to taking vitamin C, do NOT TAKE ASCORBIC ACID that a lot of people call vitamin C. It is not. It is only one element in the C complex and by taking it as a single element, it depletes your body of calcium and other minerals. It won't even cure scurvy. Drinking orange juice from commercial sources is ridiculous because the only thing in it that even resembles vitamin C is the ascorbic acid that is not good for you as a single element. You will get much more benefit from eating a fresh grapefruit because it contains lots of Quinine that is a wonderful infection fighter. There is one other thing you will need to do to keep from getting a cold or flu besides improving your diet. Go to: (800) 370 - 3447 and order a product called: "Nucleotides." Take 1 of these capsules every 1/2 hour at the first sign of a cold or flu and do this every waking hour. The next day, you will not have a cold. EDIT: Shaklee products will help you for a short while ( a few days), but like most products on the market test very weak and will damage your DNA due to the excipients used in them and synthetic chemical activators. Their vitamin C is ascorbic acid, "B" vitamins are derived from the petroleum distillate, COAL TAR, and they use over 5% of the entire milligram content of each pill of Magnesium Stearate that is an immune suppressant, nutrient absorption inhibitor (up to 80%), and simply toxic to the body. good luck to you"

spunky96 replied: "It sounds like it could be allergies. Usually around the Fall ragweed affects people. It will last until the weather gets really cold and then the ragweed pollen can no longer blow around. This is called Hay Fever. It could also be that your immune system is weak maybe because of a poor diet or another cause but i suspect that its allergies. Have you ever taken Claritan or Zyrtec? I would go to your doctor to check it out first and see what he/she says."

iamchanginglives replied: "I love the last answer and can add that my husband used to get pneumonia (even had to be hospitalized) numerous times a year until he started strengthening his immune system. Now he is almost never sick - especially not with pheumonia. We tried many brands of supplements but did not have success until we started using Shaklee. Here's where you can read about one of the products we found helpful: Don't give up. When you overcome these sicknesses, you'll regain health in ways you can't even imagine."
