red bull seems to have reduced my blood pressure plz help? so last night after playing basketball i tried red bull for the first time.. and in the middle of the night i felt numb in my right leg.. it wus like no blood was circulating through that area.. got dat feeling where u feel like needles are poking u cuz of lack of blood flow... this morning i read that red bull decreases blood pressure... that could probably be the cause.. now even if i cross my legs and sit the leg on the bottom feels numb... is there anyway to increase my blood pressure.. this is getting a lil annoying...

Tom S replied: "energy drinks are awful for you. its like smoking for your stomach. but I think your leg was just asleep last night. next time, just take a nap."

C B replied: "This was not caused by the red bull and the symptom you described is not consistent in any way with a blood pressure drop. Low blood pressure would give you a light headed feeling, not a numb leg. You probably just have an impinged nerve. If it is not way better tomorrow you need to get to the Dr. But no way is what you described due to red bull nor is it in any way related to blood pressure."

Terrence H replied: "engage in hard work or exercise , smoking pot will regulate your blood pressure so even if its not to low but to high it will balance it out"

why does red bull decrease blood pressure? when i did an experiment the results came out to be after every ones blood pressure got lower, the ages were 16, 30, 47, and 51 and still every ones was lower!!!

Eddie replied: "Interesting. You would think that the blood pressure would increase. Was the experiment a controlled one? The experiment would be more conclusive if the number of test subjects is greater. But nevertheless, it's interesting."

Taylor B replied: "It sounds like you experimentation techniques were not consistant. I am imagining you meeting up with one of your subjects, they have just been walking around etc. They sit down, you measure their blood pressure. Then they sit down while they drink the red bull. and you recheck it right when they are done. It may be that they have not been as active while drinking the red bull than thy were right before. It could be that you did not give adequate time for the effects of caffeine to set in. Whatever the case, this data cannot be accurate, as hard is that is to hear once you've worked so hard on an experiment. Here is a good source which explains many research papers showing correlations between caffeine and high blood pressure and even heart disease resulting from high blood pressure. "

Craig replied: "Because you always took the off Red Bull pressure first, and they are becoming familiar with the procedure. You need a control--such as before and after drinking water."

Lucia replied: "There was another study done abaut this drink. I had check this aout when i purchase the first one after looking at the things that said about the drink you really have to think well before deciding to continue purchasing this drink. Please read this information. Alford1, H. Cox1 and R. Wescott1 (1) Psychology Department, University of the West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom, GB Summary. The effects of Red Bull Energy Drink, which includes taurine, glucuronolactone, and caffeine amongst the ingredients, were examined over 3 studies in a total of 36 volunteers. Assessments included psychomotor performance (reaction time, concentration, memory), subjective alertness and physical endurance. When compared with control drinks, Red Bull Energy Drink significantly (P < 0.05) improved aerobic endurance (maintaining 65–75% max. heart rate) and anaerobic performance (maintaining max. speed) on cycle ergometers. Significant improvements in mental performance included choice reaction time, concentration (number cancellation) and memory (immediate recall), which reflected increased subjective alertness. These consistent and wide ranging improvements in performance are interpreted as reflecting the effects of the combination of ingredients. mutantalbino replied: "Interesting. I had recently read the results of a study where Red Bull was found to increase cardiac output. I suspect taurine is the reason as it has about 1000mg per serving but have not found any information on it other than they use 3000 to 5000 mg to treat heart failure in Japan."

Can energy drinks help increase blood pressure? Eg. Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar? ? I think i suffer from LOW blood pressure (since my hands and feet are ALWAYS cold even in 90+ degree weather (Well sometimes..) but still yeah they are always cold. I need to know a few foods and drinks that will help me increase my Blood pressure. Well i play basketball like 2 times a week. and.... im 5,8 weight=138lb 18 years old

Time Lady replied: "Yes, but they are not really good for you and will cause you to crash when they wear off. Why do you think you have low blood pressure? Maybe you need to put on some weight or get your thyroid checked."

Bravephart replied: "exercise. That way your increased metabolism and stronger heart will circulate more blood."

clickmick replied: "How low is your blood pressure? When I was an avid walker, and I was training for a marathon, my blood pressure was usually 100/60, 110/60. If you are in good physical shape, exercise daily, eat healthy, don't smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs, your B/P will be low. How long has it been since you have had a physical exam and blood tests? If I were you, I would make an appointment with my Dr. for an in-depth physical, before I started taking anything that would raise my blood pressure. I have Reynaud's Syndrome, which causes my hands and feet to turn purple and they are cold, or just the opposite, they are bright and hot. My hands and feet are never normal skin color. Reynaud's is a vascular problem. My husband's feet are always cold, and he has just had test to see if he is diabetic. Those tests were negative. He had blood work done and a test, called and EMG. This is test to check your muscle and nerve impulses. He also had Nerve Conduction Velocity tests. The doctor is concerned about peripheral neuropathy. You can read more about this at: or neuropathy.org. These were in the pamphlet that the Dr. gave my husband. Energy drinks are not a good choice. If your low blood pressure is from an underlying cause, they will do more harm than good. Energy drinks have so much caffeine, they will probably only give you increased energy and a temporary high, and could even raise your blood pressure to levels that are too high."

rafie replied: "unless a cardiologist says so, you wont know that you really have low blood pressure..you see, blood pressures are totally unique to an individual...and unless you have other symptoms that goes with your low blood pressure, i dont think there is osmething to worry..and as you said, you play sports twice a week.. and about energy drinks, yes it does raises you blood pressure, because of the caffeine that's in it, but it can't be a reason for you to drink it to keep you from having a low b/p"

LittleLulu replied: "Cold hands doesn't necessarily mean low BP, just poor circulation. I've always had cold hands and feet but my blood pressure is normal. When your hands are cold, do something... like vacuum, wash dishes, laundry. Just do something that keeps you moving quickly for a little bit. Does it for me every time. No energy drinks. Those things are very bad for your health, read the warning labels on them."

stillkickin242 replied: "First of all, before you try to raise your blood pressure you should have it taken and make sure that it is low. You wouldn't want to increase you blood pressure if its normal or high. :0) Energy drinks may raise blood pressure temporarily, but actually caffeine is a diarrhetic so you will loose lots of water and your blood pressure will go down significantly. To raise your blood pressure drink a lot, but drink things like gatorade or pedialite. Water will just go right through you. Also eat lots and lots of salt."

Tim Br replied: "Yes. Check your blood sugar."

Is Red Bull bad for someone with high blood pressure? I did an experiment, the ages of the participants were 16, 30, 40 and 51. What they did is drank one original bottle of red bull. The results are crazy! The results were..... thier blood pressures got lower!

Elmer F replied: "It's caffeinated. As such, it will raise BP. You got erroneous BP readings."

AB replied: "Theobromine is a metabolite of caffeine. It is a vasodilator which would decrease blood pressure. Caffeine has been shown to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease if used moderately. However, for someone who already has hypertension, it has no beneficial effects."

Dana M replied: "It doesn't matter what the metabolites of caffeine are & if they are a vasodilator (potent, weak, etc). The amount of caffeine in Red Bull is high and that amount of caffeine can raise the heart rate significantly. It is the rise in HR that contributes to the rise in B/P. In a person with healthy blood vessels and heart, the body easily compensates for the rise in HR by dilating the vessels to lower the pressure. But, in a person with hypertension the vessels are often "stiffened" and can't dilate as easily to compensate for the increased HR. I suspect your subjects were all "healthy" and that is why their B/P's did not rise but fell (we don't know from your post if the amount that their B/P's dropped was significant anyway). Bottom line, those with uncontrolled HTN should limit the use of any stimulants."

Does Red Bull contribute to high blood pressure? I found I had high-normal blood pressure last year and have tried to cut down on alcohol consumption, as well as salt in my diet. I actually do eat a pretty healthy, mainly vegetarian diet with a lot of Omega3 rich fish. But it doesn't seem to have had any affect on my blood pressure at all. Obviously, being high-normal I don't need to worry too much, but I'd like to lower it a little. One constant seems to be Red Bull, which I drink almost every day. Is this to blame? The reason why I say Red Bull and not strictly caffeine is because of the concoction of other chemicals and taurine it also contains. RB has the same amount of caffeine as a mug of coffee or two mugs of tea.

Giedrius replied: "Depends on Red bull amount, but yes. Red Bull contains large amounts of coffeine, which is associated with blood preasure problems,"

Pickled Robot replied: "The same person that drinks Red Bull every morning doesn't come off to me as the plenipotentiary of good health. A better question would be if caffeine cause High blood Pressure."

Kopikao replied: "I think it has higher chances causing diabetes than HBP!"

IrishPrincess loves shep & SCD replied: "red bull contains a lot of caffeine which contributes to your high blood pressure problem so i would cut the red bull out of your diet altogether. well the fish oils are good for your heat so i would keep up with that."

Runner Girl replied: "There is a really good chance that the Red Bull is raising your blood pressure. Prolonged caffeine consumption has been known to increase blood pressure for a long time, but there are new studies focusing just on the energy drinks now that seem to indicate they raise blood pressure too- see link below."

Rhianna Returns replied: "Not long term, no, but it may cause short term spikes. I haven't seen any conclusive date to suggest energy drinks cause long term problems, although I am aware there is quite a bit of concern over these drinks at the moment. Sometimes despite lifestyle and dietary changes, blood pressure remains high as some people have genetics factors too. Have secondary problems such as kidney issues been excluded? If lifestyle changes fail to lower your BP, and your BP is within treatment range, anti-hypertensive medication is the only other option."

I have Orthostatic Hypotension, is it bad for me to drink Red Bull? I have recently been diagnosed with Orthostatic Hypotension, meaning when I stand up my blood pressure drops alot. I am just starting to take medication for this. But since I have had this I have been staying away from Red Bull energy drink, because my mom is worried it will bother me. Is this true? Does the Red Bull make my blood pressure problem worse? And if I am taking this medicine, am I ok to drink it? Thank you, all answers are appreciated.

norton g replied: "Hi Howdy_Its_Me, Drinking Red Bull when you have any blood pressure problem is NOT a wise thing to do. The results of a study conducted in 2008 showed that the ingestion of one, 250mL (8 ounce) can of sugar-free Red Bull, in a sample of 30 healthy young adults, had an immediate detrimental effect on both endothelial (blood vessel lining cells) function, and normal blood clotting. This temporarily raised the cardiovascular risk in these individuals to a level comparable to that of an individual with established coronary artery disease. Based on their results, researchers involved with the study cautioned against the consumption of Red Bull in individuals under stress, in those with high blood pressure, or in anyone with established atherosclerotic disease. There has been at least one case report of Red Bull overdose causing postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome in a young athlete. Try drinks without caffeine."

Kellie - My Health Software replied: "Yes, it is bad to drink Red Bull with any heart condition, especially blood pressure problems! A study found healthy adults who drank 2 cans of an energy drink a day had a big increases in their blood pressure and heart rate. So, as you have Orthostatic Hypotension you should be avoiding them completely. The researchers studied 15 healthy adults over 7 days who did not have any caffeine for two days before and throughout the study. After they started to drink two cans of energy drink a day their heart rate increased by 5-7 heart beats per minute, and systolic blood pressure had increased by 10 mm Hg. This study and the other one mentioned in the answer above all indicate that energy drinks and blood pressure don't mix well!"
